How does a weather-house work?
A weather-house is a traditional form of a hygrometer. Depending on the humidity, one of two figures peeks out of the house while the other one disappears inside. Usually, the woman (sun women) means good weather and the man (rain man) means bad weather. The movement is guided by a piece of animal intestine (catgut), which is very sensitive to humidity. In order to function properly, the weather-house must be placed somewhere well exposed to air. Many weather-houses also include a thermometer.
